Artistic Colorado Engagement Photos
When Megan and Hunter reached out to me to take their Colorado engagement photos, I knew the usual photos by the trail weren’t the right approach for them. They’re creative and fun. They deserved engagement photos that reflected that. We headed to the Mayan Theater in Denver for a unique engagement session.
A Creative Photo Location
The Mayan Theater was built in the 1930s as a movie theater. A lot of the original details have been preserved or restored, including the dramatic red curtain that covers the screen. The exterior features beautiful stonework in blue, orange, and cream with an old-fashioned neon sign. It has old-school arthouse energy that made for a creative engagement session with Megan and Hunter.
The cinematic lighting in the theater created opportunities for unexpected and romantic images. Whether it was the stage lighting or a light glowing from beneath Hunter and Megan, the space felt intimate even though it was so big. I used different lighting techniques, including direct flash, to get a mix of editorial and fun images that showed off their personalities.
Not Your Typical Colorado Engagement Photos
The Mayan Theater has multiple parts to it. We started in the screening room where Hunter and Megan enjoyed exploring the stage and cuddling up in the seats. They shared bags of popcorn that Hunter playfully threw at the camera. Their green and red jackets popped against the neutral seats. These photos feel like movie stills, which feels spot on for the theater.
After photographing in the screening room, we headed to the bar. Megan and Hunter shared cocktails and cigarettes. These images were powerful black and white. They have a romantic nostalgia that’s emphasized by Megan’s flowing blouse, silk scarf, and high-waisted pants. These photos could have happened last year or fifty years ago. I’m so glad that Megan and Hunter were up for Colorado engagement photos that showed a different side of this incredible state.
